Punn Sanden and Nordlandsnupen

We packed our stuff and left Måstad. We made an attempt to reach Punn Sanden and the cave. I was told it is only possible to get there by boat but we managed to climb around, last part we had to use our climbing shoes and chalk. It's a lovely beach but we couldn't find the 3000 years old cave paintings. Then we walked back to Nordlandshagen, had some lunch and repacked the bikes. On the way to the other side we went hiking up Nordlandsnupen with a fantastic view all over the island and the uninhabited steep island Mosken. Then we looked for a café but it just closed but we managed to buy an ice cream at least. We went to Sørlandshagen and pitched the tent, then we made a fire and some dinner over it (since the kitchen broke) but we found huge amounts of driftwood.

This is were we will try to traverse.

It still looks possible...

The old fowlers village

Today we left the bikes and hiked to Måstad. We pitched the tent, had some lunch and went to look at the few remaining houses, then up the mountain. The sun was flowing and after the first peak Måstadfjellet came the mist creeping in from the sea and wind got stronger. We came down, filled some water in the well and started making dinner. Somehow by accident suddenly the kitchen stopped working before dinner was quite ready...

Måstad - the old fowlers village where up to 150 people lived. This has been one of the most unique settlements in Norway because of it's history and location. Here a combination of fishing, agriculture and bird hunting has been the primary livelihood perhaps as far back as the Viking Age. Oral tradition would have it that Måstad has been inhabited since the 1200's but findings at Eidet near Måstad are dated to year 900 B.C. T But the lack of roads, electricity and a harbor resulted in the closing of the only store in 1940. A few years later the shool suffered the same fate. The last residents left in 1974.

Værøy

We were a bit early for the ferry from Moskenes so we checked if it was possible to walk from Hamnøy in to the fjord just below Olstinden and it was no problem. I wanted to go there this winter but some people said it is not possible to go without boat. We entered the ferry and I looked forward to try waffels with brown cheese (which I was told is typical norwegian ferry food) but to my disappointment they didn't have any? It was on the menu but not possible to buy. The ferry trip was beautiful and weather was like the most gorgeous summer day. From the harbour we went to Nordlandshagen past the old airport which was closed after the accident in 1990. We also saw the old church which was moved here from Kabelvåg. We pitched the tent and made dinner, then we went to look for the small planet Pluto, it should be blue but we couldn't find it.

Værøy has 750 inhabitants. 43 % of them works with fish. The uninhabitated island Mosken also belongs to Værøy.
