The old fowlers village

Today we left the bikes and hiked to Måstad. We pitched the tent, had some lunch and went to look at the few remaining houses, then up the mountain. The sun was flowing and after the first peak Måstadfjellet came the mist creeping in from the sea and wind got stronger. We came down, filled some water in the well and started making dinner. Somehow by accident suddenly the kitchen stopped working before dinner was quite ready...

...is falling apart.

Måstad - the old fowlers village where up to 150 people lived. This has been one of the most unique settlements in Norway because of it's history and location. Here a combination of fishing, agriculture and bird hunting has been the primary livelihood perhaps as far back as the Viking Age. Oral tradition would have it that Måstad has been inhabited since the 1200's but findings at Eidet near Måstad are dated to year 900 B.C. T But the lack of roads, electricity and a harbor resulted in the closing of the only store in 1940. A few years later the shool suffered the same fate. The last residents left in 1974.
