Å

Yesterday my dad and Niklas went to the Vikingmuseum and I picked up my bike in Leknes and brought it home. Then in the afternoon we went to Kilan and Ragnar finally caught some wind and went kiting.

Today we went to Å where the road ends and bought some bread at the old bakery which was built in 1844, burned down in 1888 and rebuilt again. The stone bakers oven has room for 120 loaves of bread. It is fired with birchwood and the bread is baked in traditional way.

Every winter over 20.000 fishermen came to Lofoten to work hard and they needed feeding so every fishing village had at least one bakery.

We stopped for coffee in Reine which was quite expensive. The view from Reine was somewhat limited to the fog low down over the mountains. We were also looking for the sun in Reine (from Planet Lofoten) most young people don't know what this is but luckily we met Gun on the bridge, such a positive vibrating woman and told me she grew up in Vindstad and then moved to Reine when the scool was closed. She has been living here since and today she was on her way to visit her mother of 92 at the nursing home since it was her mother's birthday.

After this we went to Nusfjord which another small fishing village that claims to be one of the oldest and best preserved fishing hamlets with a long-standing tradition of "Lofotfiske" or seasonal cod fishing. The fishing hamlet is an idyllic gem, crammed with history and superb buildings like a living museum. As you walk around you will find a protected power station, 4 protected fishermen's cabin, the sawmill, the smithy, various boat houses, a cod-liver oil refinery, a shop looking like a museum. Everything has been refurbished to it's original condition.
